New Book Chapter: Deep-Sea Corals of the North and Central Pacific Seamounts

My colleagues and I, led by Dr. Amy Baco, published a review of the state of knowledge of deep-sea coral ecosystems on seamounts in the North and Central Pacific Ocean. This collaborative effort provides a summary of deep-sea coral biodiversity on seamounts, influences on their distribution, oceanography, and human-mediated impacts. It summarizes much of the work that has been done to date within US waters in the years following the NOAA Ocean Exploration Campaign to Address Pacific Monument Science, Technology, and Ocean Needs (CAPSTONE), as well as expeditions by the R/V Falkor and E/V Nautilus cruises in the region. The review suggests we are barely scratching the surface of deep-sea coral understanding in the largest ocean on Earth and provides future directions for exploration, sampling, and analysis.
